it’s the unseen evidence that matters the most
like the fear in the heart at the thought of a ghost
the edge of the blade is truly a fear
but the thrust on the handle is far better to be near

I’ve begun to think that maybe we desperately need to have an idol? … and a ‘physical’ one at that

… that maybe we’ve created “God” in our own image to substantiate and justify our very subjective world views … that we participate in institutionalized religious activities primarily to abate our own insecurities? … to try shift our shaky and subjective views as far away from their desperate subjectivity as possible by joining together with others who seem to share our beliefs … or at least a fairly similar perspective?  …joining together with others who seem to affirm the views and values we hope are true, … those who encourage us and make us feel good about ourselves and our frail choices… the ones we really never chose for ourselves, but that which we picked up from our own social and cultural contexts?

… and that maybe we are indeed profoundly frail … and that possibly we know deep down that our perspective is merely guess work at best

… but this is so extremely frightening for us, … some unmentionable

so we flock together…

just in case?

… and that it’s not really worship of God we seek to participate in and be part of, … but rather a grasping to hopefully obtain a sense our own ‘worth-ship’? .. as we stumble about, trying to make sense of our existence and the meaning of it all

… but maybe it’s all ok?

maybe God’s not so upset about this?

maybe God really is omniscient?

who amongst us would have guessed that?

and maybe God’s okay with it because at least we are searching … and hopefully asking questions?

and hopefully this is true?

… can I get an ‘amen’?

Jesus Christ was a revolutionary.

He died because he was killed.

He was killed because he was offensive.

His whole life as recorded in the accepted cannon of scripture documents an individual who flew in the face of society on almost every level.

The religious order as well as the governmental order were confused and disturbed, even outraged at his lifestyle, his teachings and the things he did.

Even his closest followers and devotees were offended and confused at his every move, his every word.

In these days there are millions, perhaps even billions who declare themselves to be disciples and passionate followers of this same Jesus Christ.

Perhaps I am no more than a cynical, disgruntled, negative, anti-establishment, rebellious dysfunctional, …. but including myself, I battle to see even one person amongst the odd seven billion people in the world today who lives their lives in the remotest similitude to the one we claim to follow so passionately and exclusively.

… you just need prisoners

“… i look and see all the oppression taking place under the sun:

i see the tears of the oppressed— and they have no comforter;
power is on the side of the oppressors—
yet they too have no comforter…”

in our present consumer society freedom is mostly seen as having access to the biggest part of the pie … or a big part of the pie previously denied

this is perhaps nice, but is it really freedom?

so who then is free?

many institutions promise freedom but first these require signing up to them and alignment to some form of prescribed order

some see freedom as no order at all … but is that freedom?

a questionable position could be to have freedom defined as something outside of our present reality

…but we would have to leave before we would be free to find out

… and what if it’s not true? … is that freedom?

so what then is freedom?

it is said that knowing the truth will set you free

but how do we know what the truth is?

… and how free are we to even find out?

Reason –  the basis or motive for an action, decision, or conviction (
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/reason
)

There’s this much cherished passage in the ancient texts that has God recorded as saying to a deviant and fallen mankind, “come, let us reason together…”

What was God asking here?

Can we reason?

And if so is the reason we apply really objective at all?… and if it is, can we really make a rational decision one way or another?

Whatever we do, whether good or bad will have a basis or motive for that action.  To my mind this is not in question.  However, whether the basis or motive we apply in any given situation is conscious or subconscious, intentional or ‘instinctual’ is for me a most interesting challenge.

Can we reasonably believe that we are in control of our thoughts and actions cognitively?  Or does basic reason suggest that we are driven by other things … even things we are not even aware of? …perhaps deep things from many diverse, possibly even unfathomable sources?

There is a basis and a motive every time when we act as well as when we react … but what is it?  Perhaps we would go mad if we even tried to understand what these are?

Clearly we spend a lot of time trying to persuade others of our point of view

Maybe all we are doing is trying to persuade ourselves?

Why Doubt Is a Passionate Exercise

http://www.psychologytoday.com/collections/201112/do-you-believe/is-our-faith-misguided

it would be nice

…but I can’t

the questions outweigh the answers

the answers steadily ask for more

to doubt

only increases faith

for doubt asks for more

and doesn’t pretend

to search is the only way to find

and to seek is the only way to obtain

as horizons stretch out further

frustration strains the eyes

fuel for the restless

energy for the mind

to explore is to learn

but wouldn’t it be nice

just to pretend

…but I can’t

Which religious group meeting (‘church’) you attend is much the same as which banking institution you choose.
It depends exclusively on what return on your investment is perceived to be the most beneficial to you.

Do we believe in a Devil?

Do we believe in a God?

Can we believe in both at the same time?

Some would say that they believe in a God who is good and is active in initiating healing and extending grace and forgiveness, love and acceptance.  A good God who is the giver of all good gifts and the creator of all that is good.

Many of those same people will also say that they believe in an evil Devil who is against the good God.  An evil Devil who is active in perpetrating pain, death and destruction, extending hate and trouble, suffering and rejection.  An evil Devil who is the source of all that is bad.

Many believe that God created all things and that nothing that is present in any way was made outside of God.  That God is supreme, sovereign, before and beyond all things.

Yet we believe in a Devil.

So who created the Devil?

Or how did the Devil come to be?

I have been told I have an unusual mind, a unique way of looking at the world.  In fact, I get told this often.  At times some have been less than encouraging in their descriptiveness about my apparent unique or unusual take on things.  At first it wasn’t always so, but these days I don’t blame them at all anymore.   Actually, I feel very much the same – about myself and about most others around me.   It’s not an easy thing to gradually come to this understanding but I think it is a good thing, even a most wonderful thing.

There’s this passage in the Psalms that goes something like blessed are those whose strength is in you, whose hearts are set on pilgrimage.  A song I have heard often sung exchanges ‘pilgrimage’ with ‘always moving on.’  I like that.  It sounds more practical to me.  Blessed are those who have found strength in who made them and how they have been made and because of that are always moving on.

I have found that the more honest I can be the more I am at peace with myself and the more I can be a positive contribution to my environment.  However, I have also found that the more I am honest the less at peace I can be within myself and my environment.  A lot of the time the longer I hang around or ‘overstay my welcome’ the more trouble seems to start settling in – for me and my environment.

So, after decades of bashing my own head and having others kindly return the favour it seems good to me to always try to keep my mind focused on moving on.  And this surprisingly is not a bad thing at all.  In fact it’s quite sensible and very rewarding all round.

Sometimes this may mean a physical move and other times it means a less physical move.  Believe it or not I have found that the attitudinal or less physical shifts are by far the most difficult – mainly perhaps because it usually means staying in the same context and consciously shifting within myself.  And this is usually an extremely difficult thing to do (well, at least for me it is).

My unusual or unique angle on this; I think we all have a unique way of looking at things.  Also that perhaps it is those who consciously or unconsciously choose to forsake and align their unique perspective to those around them who are ‘unusual’ in the less encouraging understanding of that word?  One cannot be two or more people at the same time (some would even go so far as to classify this as a form of insanity).

However, mostly we all tend to seek a safe place for ourselves and often this requires us fitting in with what others think and feel.  We can even feel like this is the best way and a way that gives us the most peace.  We have learned this from our environment and from our parents to our peers to our politicians, the majority by far even stress the importance of conformity.  Personally I have found the opposite to be true.  To add to this I am also aware that we are firmly encouraged not to conform to the patterns around us but to be transformed in the renewal of our own minds.

Perhaps if our individual strength is really in the one who created us and watches over us, the one who caused us to be unique in so many ways, if not every way – from our fingerprints to our DNA to the way we perceive all things – we would have less need to find our strength in those around us?  Perhaps we would then be more relaxed with ourselves and our environment and more in tune with our unique role in this experience we call life.

And that’s it for me so far I suppose.  I have come to realise for myself that perhaps the secret of it all is that we must somehow come to really try to understand who we are personally and then as best we can, assess our realistic impact on our immediate environment.  We need to soberly assess both the positive and the negative part we play in the world around us.

I have also found that if we set up camp anywhere, in our thinking, our culture, our theology, even our understanding about ourselves and others around us, things can slowly become quite toxic.  On top of this if we set up camp in any way we obviously stop moving.  We cannot please everyone all the time and we ourselves cannot be pleased all the time by others.

But we can give each other space.  Space to be themselves.  Space to express their own unique, unusual perspective.  We can also give ourselves space.  Space to move, to grow and to explore.

Agreement is very important.  But harmony is never the same note played together in unison.  Harmony is different notes sounding at the same time and in the same space which collectively make a rich chord.  Many chords make up a symphony.

Many unique, unusual sounds make up a soothing waterfall. …. but the water droplets need to keep moving on for the waterfall to be a reality.
