we watched and studied others like flies on a wall … and not having a life of our own we found directionlessness in the vicarious apparition before us and this we celebrated as reality … it’s not that the indecision was emphatic, it was more that the next steps were backwards… so, not satisfied with an unlimited imagination we ventured headlong into the game of deceptive charades

and/or or not

so, not satisfied with an unlimited imagination we ventured headlong into the game of deceptive charades … it’s not that the indecision was emphatic, it was more that the next steps were backwards… so we watched and studied others like flies on a wall … and not having a life of our own we found directionlessness in the vicarious apparition before us and this we celebrated as reality

Happy Xmas?

Today is the day of reconciliation in my country

It’s a joke

Also on this same day the people cry, “Merry Xmas”

It’s a joke

We preach a materialist gospel

To the glory of ourselves

shameless neocolonialism

We live in captivity and celebrate liberty

Like the blind admiring the sunrise

Who are the real fools?

Those who say there is no God

Or those who say they worship a God

who is no God at all?

By the rivers of Babylon we sat and wept
when we remembered Zion.
There on the poplars
we hung our harps,
for there our captors asked us for songs,
our tormentors demanded songs of joy;
they said, “Sing us one of the songs of Zion!”

How can we sing the songs of the LORD
while in a foreign land?
If I forget you, Jerusalem,
may my right hand forget its skill.
May my tongue cling to the roof of my mouth
if I do not remember you,
if I do not consider Jerusalem
my highest joy. …….

democratic control | nakedpastor.

I wonder how many faithful church goers see a linkage or similarity between the conflict of free speech in a democratic political system vs. a totalitarian state of social governance and the freedom offered by Christ and the unilateral control of leadership exercised in the local church?

the love of an erroneous perception of the reality of wealth is the radical foundation of all evil

to wield this illusion as a medieval mace for political gain and the establishment of artificial worth and power is evil personified

We seem to live in a very relative world.  Perhaps this world we live in is much more emotionally and culturally based, perceived and even defined than most reasonably intelligent people would be willing to admit.

Everything seems to be relative and equally everything seems to be very relational.  It is virtually impossible to do anything in isolation and yet so many of us feel so isolated.

Perhaps it’s how we relate that really counts.

Our perception is all we have and we are only one … or are we?

Even reality itself may well be completely relative, …. and this could be a very lonely, alienating thing, but it’s all we’ve got …. together.

It is clear that thrown into this cocktail we are also amazingly adaptive.  This can be as good as it is bad – we can change for the better or we can change for the worse.  We can absorb open-mindedness or closed-mindedness.  Mostly we seem unaware when we do this – either way.

So what might this reveal about our faith? … what we believe and why we believe it?

What might it reveal about our ‘reality’?

… and where to from here?

Here is an extremely interesting video clip off www.ted.com. enjoy!

http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/eng/jill_bolte_taylor_s_powerful_stroke_of_insight.html

Just listened to a short but very interesting and somewhat provocative talk on TED about social networking http://video.ted.com/talk/podcast/2011G/None/AdamOstrow_2011G.mp4 and I got to thinking about how we wrestle with a concept of a “God” who is aware of everything that goes on.  Every thought, action, intent – even the deep, unconscious meanderings of the heart.  An amazing thought indeed.

What a headache!!  I can’t imagine what it could be like.  Billions of people, whether asleep or awake each having billions of thoughts.  Conscious or unconscious.  Feelings,  emotions,  plans,  humour,  silliness,  brilliance,  stupidity …. and everything in between.  I can’t imagine what it must be like to be God.  With all due respect, I wouldn’t want God’s job?

And the narrative suggests that we want to take the place of God.  Evict God and elevate ourselves as the supreme rulers of our destiny.  …. another  amazing thought indeed.

And then this short talk suggests the amount of data we are generating all the time and the potential it may have as we ride this exponential wave or virtual reality …

I can’t help thinking about what goes through the mind of a dog when it eventually does succeed in catching it’s own tail?

I tried Twitter, it’s clearly THE antisocial network … but Facebook is THE relationship illusion.

Here’s what I did: – for well over a week I tried to get some response, indeed ANY response from Twitters (what do we call ourselves on Twitter? Twits? Tweets? Twerps? Tweeters? Twankers?).. I asked questions, threw out inflammatory statements, insulted here and there …  and, …. no response – well, one or two responses at most, but statistically these were negligible.

My sad conclusion: Twitter is for the pseudo-relational who seem only interested in  wanting to post their own statements and links (and some never seem to say anything from personal opinion but only post links – perhaps to portray that they are well read and conversant with media issues – ?)  and simply seem not at all interested in any form of meaningful personal interaction other than loving the sound of their own fingers ticking away at the keyboard and the ensuing exhilarating, almost orgasmic sensation of hearing their own ‘tweet’ resounding in the canyons of their own mind as they repeat it back to themselves when they ‘proof-read’ their own brilliance.  You know what I mean, … sort of much like masturbation, really only totally self indulgent with no possibility of or any desire for fruitfulness.

On a positive note though, it is an interesting tool to gather info that otherwise would take hours of surfing and research – like the news feed tweets and a very few humerous Twits(?) who from time to time add a stimulating and even challenging angle on things.  My sincere thanks to those few – but you probably will never know who you are as the nature of the beast is what it is.

Also, if you’re a ‘fan’ type of person I do suppose you can feel perhaps profoundly and wonderfully stimulated by following the meandering escapades of some pop persona of your fantasy … but I have yet to hear a convincing argument against my view that this is equally no more than masturbation and desperate ‘soft-porn’ voyeurism of a tragically sad nature.  It may well be worth considering getting a life for yourself instead of living yours through that of some other person.  Perhaps it’s also wiser to go through one’s own underwear before rummaging through that of others.

Facebook however, is not really much better and seems determined to re-evolve (perhaps the better word would be de-evolve) into a purely telemarketing tool sans the telephone … ‘mongrelized’ (don’t look it up – I made the delightful word up myself) with an email spam and phishing scam sans the normal private/business email account.  This serves only to brutally confront any who might use the network sincerely wanting to interact relationally with other humans into being distracted under siege by flashing windows querying whether they would like to join an online dating or singles club, or making one think if the clothes they are wearing whilst typing in the privacy of their own little nest are fitting with the latest fashions and adequately insured for all risks in the unlikely event of them ever meeting one of their ‘friends’ face-to-face.
The only significant advantage in Facebook for me is that it perhaps seems to allow more interaction (albeit not necessarily that much more, but more nevertheless).  For me the interactions and exchanges on updates and notes, pictures and comments are arguably well worth it.   Not really personal contact, but interesting and engaging.

What both share in common is the caressing stroke they seem to play to the ego’s of most subscribers especially those who seem to be high on the “friends” tally.   However, at the bottom of this pile are those who can claim to be a friend of someone they deem significant even if they never will meet them (and if they did the ‘celebrity’ would clearly have no time nor concern for them anyway).  But for the hopefuls who do still wish to climb socially in life …  at the top of this same pile there is the ubber elite who can insert “full” after their page names having exceeded that mystical 5000 friends tally and then occupy themselves by spending the rest of their waking time redirecting the imaginary millions of other “friends” they are convinced will immanently want to flood in and sign up to be their intimate ‘companions’ to another “fan” page of theirs.   All I can say on behalf of the multitudes of defaced bookers is, “O’ Great Poo-Bah(s), we, the lowly, are unworthy, mere mortals … please forgive us for we know not what to do to gather like you.”
On Twitter it is not uncommon to see Twitters(?) ‘following’ ga-zillions of others only to be followed by few – my heart goes out to them. Sneakily,  as part of my ‘experiment’ I deliberately never returned the favour of ‘following’ some who decided to ‘follow’ me (seemingly one of those unspoken universal rules of Twitterville) and they soon stopped ‘following’ me then … Hmmmm??
Cynical old me!! … after all that is the spirit of marketing in our ever so evolved civilised capitalist social system, is it not? – “you scratch my back, I’ll stab yours.”

Neither Facebook nor Twitter are social networks for me.  They are base and insensitive marketing platforms taking advantage of the emptiness of relationships in our modern societies and majoring on the new age currencies of narcissism, political power and economic profit.
So, for me both are really “look-at-me” opportunistic tools … no more and no less … only perhaps Facebook has, along with it’s fractionally more interactive potential, the negative side of actively aiding and abetting distinctly more predators to prowl around, starting with Mr Zuckerberg et al and branching quickly (and exponentially) out to all the hungry 2nd, 3rd and 4th tier predatory advertisers – making Facebook, extremely wealthy ultimately at their own and eventually everyone else’s expense.

So there’s this totally cool guy who looks like a million bucks and a sexy girl who also looks like a million bucks and they are doing stuff while we watch.  We are getting all excited and it makes us feel these sensations that are really like, totally sensational!  I mean so sensational it’s totally unreal. It’s like we’re there but we’re not there, but we are there.  And we are feeling every sensation   And we are watching it all right in front of our eyes.  It’s all happening … us, them,  … and we are happening.  We’re sitting there silently, each in our own world, mouths hanging wide open … it’s totally crazy… it’s like it’s totally dark all around us and there’s lots of us there …  but it’s like we are all alone with our own thoughts and feelings, … and all we can do is watch and feel … each and every feeling, … everything they feel we feel … , everything they do and say is like we are there, inside of them, right next to them, doing it, saying it, feeling it.  It’s like we ARE them. … I mean, this kind of thing doesn’t happen in real life does it?  … and it’s all just perfect.

And then they look into each others eye’s ….  there are violins swirling somewhere behind us, no – next to … , no all around us … and then the credits roll down, the lights fade in slowly and we jostle out up the isles and into the blinding light of the foyer and it’s real again.

“A bag of popcorn?”

“Yeah, great! Thanks!”

“What did you think of the movie?”

“Loved it!” – “totally loved it”

“And their clothes? What did you think of what they were wearing?”

“Loved it, – I totally loved it”

We’re in the car now and on the way home and right in front of us as we edge out of the cinema parking area is a bottle green stubby pin-striped hatchback.  On the left hand rear side of the car just above the tail light is a sticker with the slogan,

“I LOVE JESUS”

[aka - helping is not always helpful]

it’s good to be kind and helpful.  i don’t know about you but i think it is.  at least, if you said it i’d be one of the last to oppose your statement.  but i’m not always good at it although i try my best to be.  but truth be told there’s a side to me that is not always helpful and i have come to understand (more and more as i have grown older it seems) that i am not naturally so kind or good as i’d like myself and others to think i am.

we have just come through a very difficult learning curve involving trying to help someone else.  this person seemed in need and we wanted to help.  so we stepped in and took a stand at our expense and did what we believed was a helpful, kind thing to do.  it may sound stupid to you, but a big reason we did this was because we have been helped so many times by so many and we so appreciated it.  we also believe that if we give we will in time and in turn receive

that was then.  now, well over 50 grand down the toilet later and all manner of internal stress and toxicity of thought – not to mention the loss of sleep and sense of humour, we have terminated the whole thing and walk away …. still with a sense of guilt that maybe we could have continued to sustain the loss …..  and amazingly still with the thought and intent to be kind, generous, and forgiving as we terminated.

now generally i do this by faith not by nature (i speak mainly for myself here so please don’t burst a valve just yet).  but i have fast begun coming to a new suggestion or take on reality for myself.

my wife asked me a strange question this morning.  she asked me what gift this person left me in all of this?  “no more red wine for you darling!!” was my immediate thought, but i never let my lips know what my head was thinking and instead i thought about it and this is the gift i received:

the gift to me is the realisation that i am fast coming to a conclusion that sometimes trying to be kind and helping others can mess with major lessons that need to be learned.  … and i’m referring here to lessons needing to be learned in those we are trying to help as well as in us.

more often than not helping is not really helpful at all.

… and!! ….perhaps this could be the biggest gift i received – looking inside myself sometimes i think we “help” others more because it helps us to think we are being helpful/kind, etc and this is more about us than it is about those we think we are trying to help – so are we even being helpful to ourselves by doing this sort of thing?

“don’t cast your pearls before swine” and “don’t give to dogs what is holy” comes to my mind but the point here is not to be insensitive and callous, but rather to spend our real energy in the acquisition of the wisdom to distinguish between swines without making a pig of ourselves

There is an imported Motorcycle manufacturer which produces high end motorcycles for worldwide distribution.  They manufacture their luxury motorbikes with a built in alarm system as a standard feature.  The alarm is a fairly hi-tech device that needs to be enabled upon delivery if the new owner so desires and most choose this option for obvious reasons when they take delivery.  Because the motorcycles are very attractive a real problem exists wherein the public seem to be overwhelmingly drawn to touch and even sit on the bikes if they are seen parked unattended in some public place.  Passing people have been known to touch & even fondle the bikes from time to time, running their hands caressingly over the chrome fittings and also over the immaculate paint work on the tank and fenders. Many onlookers at times are seemingly very  attracted to these bikes and appear to also sometimes have the urgent need to be photographed whilst sitting or languishing on the parked vehicle often times with a “Tom Cruise – Top Gun” attempted look-a-like facial expression on their mesmerized faces.  Sometimes they even have their girlfriends, mothers, grandparents, pets and kids on their laps with their cute, buckled shoes and sticky ice cream sodden hands smearing their apparent love, respect and affection everywhere.

One of the benefits of the standard alarm system on these imported motorcycles is a “tampering device.”  It is a clever motion detector device that activates itself and gives an initial warning when anyone touches the bike or tries to lift it up off its stand or turns the ignition switch.  It initially gives off a shrill screech to warn off the would be intruder but if the intruder persists it fully activates and the siren blasts an ear-chilling barrage of squeals and the bike shuts all its systems down rendering it unstealable (short of being winched up onto the back of some flat-bed truck and driven off).

This nifty device has a few short-comings though. One of which is that the motion detector would howl incessantly if the bike was towed on a trailer and eventually the bike battery would discharge if the eardrums didn’t burst first.  A simple, clever process can be employed to disengage the motion detecting aspect of the alarm so that the bike can be transported securely and without any alarm going off all the time.  This is called the “transport Mode.”

Any real biker will tell you that bikes are for riding and not for being towed on a trailer.  Bikes were never built to be towed in transport mode from one place to another with the motor off and sensory alarm disengaged.  They were built to be ridden and enjoyed and a big part of this enjoyment is full contact with the road and the wind literally full in the face and the deep throated growl of a powerful engine propelling one forward.

I cannot help wondering with the elections coming up in a few days just how many of us have our hearts and minds active and engaged with the fullness of life and how many are up on some political spin-doctors trailer with their motors off, being towed along with wheels firmly locked down and their sensory system in “Transport Mode?”
