deception is a strange, illusive thing
as soon as you start playing with it, it starts playing with you

it’s strange, but you’ll never know

a chameleon remains a chameleon
regardless of its colour
though it tries and tries
with all its might
to become like another
we can close our eyes
and clench our teeth
and hold our breath forever
but everybody knows
that culture grows
regardless of the smelly effect
it has on the nose

the emperors clothes
being stripped
off to the dry cleaners
for cleansing
from blood spatter
…and other bodily fluids
scrutinized for lice
…and other parasites
off to the master seamstress
like brand new clothes
for refitting,

and all this by our hands
the hands of the many
those who first fitted him out in finery
who sang the songs of beauty
who laid the red carpets out
appointing the praise singers
joining in on the chorus

a brutal man, yes
of vile intellect
and little understanding
walking the crooked paths
tearing at the threads of civility
molesting the boundaries of wisdom
filled with wanton greed
a rampant power monger
intoxicated by lust
for power, control
and any other pleasures

our hero then
but not for now
he has served our bidding
we have no more use for him
only perhaps as our scapegoat
no longer the tool in hand,
the fool in our hand

we, the commissioners of the oath
we, who made the mark
who voted him in to do our bidding
we gave him his new clothes
we praised him at the parade
we, who are now in search of another
another fool to try our new garment on

and there will be many
many takers
many makers, and breakers
the eager to use, and be used

it is all the rage
it is all the fashion
a fool for fools
and there will be no end

until it is over

don’t vote!
it’s a waste of paper
plant a tree
it won’t betray you later

have a heart for the prophet

the poor beggar who lives with us

he claims to hear

and speak for God

the creator

or the universe

but he is employed by man

the poor are easily discerned

but only with much difficulty

even though they stagger

stumbling, falling in the streets

we trip over them

not seeing them lying there

unable to look them in the eye

we all gaze in the mirror

without really looking to see

lest we see what we’re looking at

and the truth strikes a mortal blow

the stomach speaks louder than the mouth

though it has no voice, it shouts

… indeed, it roars

who do warriors turn to when they drop their swords and fall,

and who will pick up the double edged weapons and return to them their honour?

when the hearts of the people are locked in their own distended bellies

and the words of the prophets are willingly captive to the thoughts of the thoughtless

is it then finally time for the stones to scream out?

and the rocks to shatter under the relentless gaze of the angry sun?

for the water to evaporate before it touches the soil

and for the children to be dead before they are born?

when mankind celebrates high noon in the dead of midnight

and turns into victory the stench of suicidal defeat

it is time gentlemen, it is time!

it’s all very much like reality TV according to the script

the more you buy into it the more you get ripped

many a tear did flow

between the promise and the blow

a lie so sweet, so secure

who would have thought it was a lure?

so in the chorus line we stood

it sounded sweet, it felt so good

the bass grooved on and did its thing

man, that band could really swing

that was then, and this is now

the golden calf became a plow

and now it’s not even the Blues we sing

but a mournful dirge, with a sombre sting

for they spun a lyric filled with hope

from a stage with a scaffold and a stretch of rope

who would have known they dug us a hole

and we would be swinging from that pole

but hope is not lost and we goose step on

in endless pursuit of that evasive song

after all this is the day, humanity’s finest

with our eyes shut tight no one can blind us

under cover of light the darkness moves in

the mist is so thick

but the air it is thin

in plain site another card enters the pack

we look, turn away, but there’s no going back

instead we wait, and we watch

but we don’t see a thing

we have no idea of the state we are in

there’s Judas in every one of us
it’s very clear to see
we cannot run nor hide away
this truth can set us free
to see this is the first of steps
towards a way away
from trading lies and deep deceit
the way we live each day
that in the very best of deeds
we cannot shake the fact
that what we give to others freely
is all to get it back
